For this week’s Beena Business, skilled craftsman Graham McColl answers our questions about Recoll Upholstery run by he and his wife Sylvia. Recoll is the place to go for traditional restoration to keep the authenticity of your antiques, or to create a unique modern design.
Tell us about your business
I’ve been in the business for 30 years and been here for 20 years. We service the whole Melbourne area with traditional upholstering and manufacturing of furniture.
It was an up and coming area with down to earth people.
What makes your business unique?
I’m the best at what I do! There’s no one around that can do 17th and 18th century original furniture properly.
If you could speak to your younger self, what advice would you give?
Don’t party as much! Don’t sell yourself short, not doing that is how you get work.
What is the funniest experience you’ve had here?
An employee I had once said he would deliver a pair of antique chairs in the back of his ute. One of them fell out the back. He was a young bloke and probably hooned it over a speed bump and the top of the chair broke off. When I got to work the next day he had sawn off the top of the other chair so that they’d match.
